Kithmini Weerakoon, Nugegoda, was the first UNESCO award winning children’s writer in Sri Lanka. The book ‘Punchi Api Punchi Katha’ written by this child writer IN 1985,  won a children’s literary award under the efforts of the Children’s Book Association to popularize children’s books in Sri Lanka as per UNESCO guidelines. His school was Mahanama Vidyalaya, Colombo. Adding a child to a new school was nothing like political interference at the time. The father of Punchi Kithmini, an education officer, wanted to enroll his son at the Royal College. His son’s special qualifications were to write an award-winning children’s book.

Accordingly, the gates of the Royal College were opened. When the book was presented to the Minister of Education Services Lionel Jayatilake by the Children’s Book Association, he also congratulated the little child writer. After high school, kithmini Weerakoon entered the medical profession. Little Kithmini Association, which has been introduced to the New World through the Children’s Book Association, is familiar. The Association is now interested in knowing where Dr. Kethmi Weerakoon is. If anyone knows, please let us know.
