නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා නම් වූ ඒ අසහාය ජන නායකයා 1995 දී, ඒ කියන්නේ දකුණු අප්‍රිකාවේ ජනාධිපති ධූරය ලැබී මාස ගණනකට පසුව හමුවීමේ භාග්‍යය ලැබූ ප්‍රථම ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයා ලෙස කොළඹ ළමා පොත් සංගමයේ සභාපති ආචාර්ය ධම්මදේශ අම්බලමපිටිය මහතා ඉතිහාස ගතවනු ඇත.1995 පොදු රාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩලය විසින් සිම්බාබ්බේ හරාරේ නුවරදී පැවැත්වූ මිනිස් අයිතිවාසිකම් පිළිබඳ ජාත්‍යන්තර සමුළුව පවත්වන ලද්දේ ජනාධිපති නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා මැතිතුමාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන්.. ්‍රී ලංකාවේ යුද ගිනි පැතිරුණු සමයෙක පැවැත්වුන එම සමුළුවට ශ්‍රී ලංකා රජයේ නියෝජිතයකු යැවීමට නොහැකි වුණා. ඒ සඳහා එම සමුළුවට එවකට ලෝක යුනිස්කෝ සම්මානය දිනා සිටී ආචාර්ය අම්බලම්පිටිය මහතාට සහභාගි වන ලෙස ොදු රාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩලයෙන් ආරාධනයක් ලැබුණා. ඒ අනුව ්‍රී ලංකාව පිළිබඳ වාර්තාව ආචාර්ය අම්බලන්පිටිය විසින් එම ජාත්‍යන්තර සමුළුවට ඉදිරිපත් කරන ලදී. එම වාර්තාව දෙස සාවධානව සවන් දී සිටි මැන්ඩෙලා තුමා මෙසේ පැවසුවා. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සැබෑ තත්ත්වය unesco සම්මානලාභියෙකු වන අම්බලම්පිටිය මහතා ඉදිරිපත් කළ country report එකෙන් හොඳින් අවබෝධ කරගත් බව පැවසුවා. එම වාර්තාව තුළින් ්‍රී ලංකාවේ නියම තත්ත්වය හොඳින්ම අවබෝධ කරගත් බවත් නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා මැතිතුමා පැවසීය, රාජ්‍ය සම්මාන දිනූ ලේඛකයෙකු වන ආචාර්ය අම්බලම්පිටිය ගේ හිතවතකු වන නොබෙල් සම්මානලාභී Vol Zoinka මහතා මෙම සමුළුවේ ලේඛකාධිකාරී ලෙස කටයුතු කරන ලදී, මැන්ඩෙලා තුමාගේ 100 වැනි ජන්ම දිනය 1918/07/18 දිනට යෙදී තිබුණි. ජන්ම සංවත්සරය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මහත් උත්සවශ්‍රීයෙන් කොළඹ ළමා පොත් සංගම විසින් පවත්වන ලදී. එතැන් සිට සිට සෑම වසරකම Nelson මැන්ඩෙලා දිනය පැවැත්වීමට කොළඹ ළමා පොත් සංගමය විසින් කටයුතු සංවිධානය කරන ලදී.නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා දිනය වෙනුවෙන් කොළඹ ළමා පොත් සංගමය විසින් දීප ව්‍යාප්ත ළමා සාහිත්‍යය තරගයක් සංවිධානය කරන ලදී. පසුගිය ඉරුදින කොළඹ මහජන පුස්තකාලයේ දී පැවැත්වූ නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා දින ළමා සාහිත්‍ය තරගයේ ජයග්‍රහකයන් ට රන් පදක්කම් සහ සහතික තිළිණ පිරිනැමීමට පැමිණි ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දකුණු අප්‍රිකානු මහ කොමසාරිස් ගරු . Robina Marks මැතිණිය මෙසේ පැවැසුවාය. මිනිස් ඉතිහාසයේ කලාතුරකින් පහළවන උසස් මානව ගුණාංගවලින් යුත් අප්‍රිකානු ජනනායක නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා මැතිතුමා සතු විශේෂ ගුණාංග අටක් මා හඳුනාගෙන තිබෙනවා. පසුගිය සිව් වසරක් පුරා ම ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ආචාර්ය අම්බලම්පිටිය සිදුකරන ළමා හිතකාමී කටයුතු මා හොඳින්ම අවබෝධ කරගෙන සිටිනවා. නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා තුමා සතු උතුම් ගුණාංග වැඩිම ගණනක් ආචාර්ය අම්බලම්පිටිය සතු බව මම හොඳින්ම අවබෝධ කරගෙන සිටිනවා. නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා මැතිතුමාට ගෞරව දැක්වීමට කැමති ළමයෙක් සිටීනම් අම්බලම්පිටිය මහතාගේ චරිතය අනුගමනය කරන ලෙස මා ඉල්ලා සිටිනවා. නෙල්සන් මැන්ඩෙලා ්‍රීමතානන් සිහිපත් කරමින් පැළයක් රෝපණය පසුව උත්සවයේ කටයුතු ආරම්භ කළා…………………………………………………………………Dr. Dhammedha Ambalamapitiya, President of the Colombo Children’s Book Association, will go down in history as the first Sri Lankan to meet Nelson Mandela in 1995, months after assuming the presidency of South Africa.1995 The Commonwealth International Conference on Human Rights held in Harare, Zimbabwe, chaired by President Nelson Mandela. South African High Commissioner to Sri Lanka HE Robina Marks presented gold medals and certificates to the winners of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Day Literature Competition held at the Colombo Public Library last Sunday. South African High Commissioner to Sri Lanka HE Robina Marks said; “ I have identified eight special qualities of the African leader Nelson Mandela, one of the rarest human qualities in human history. I am well aware of the child friendly activities of Dr. Ambalampitiya in Sri Lanka over the past four years. I am well aware that Dr. Ambalampitiya has the greatest number of great qualities of Nelson Mandela.
